Greg McElroy of ESPN was on the call in Oxford when Ole Miss survived a rough start to race away from Georgia, giving Lane Kiffin and the Rebels a signature win for the 2024 campaign that also revitalized their College Football Playoff hopes.<\/p>\n
McElroy, like most SEC observers, foresaw a bleak outcome for Ole Miss following its opening possession.<\/p>\n
“If you would have asked me after the first series, how things were going to go for Ole Miss, I would have told you things are going to be really tough,” McElroy said on his show Always College Football<\/em>. “Jaxson Dart gets hurt, Georgia goes right down and scores, and now you’re sitting there thinking ‘backup quarterback in the game, down 7, how is this going to be a good day for Ole Miss?'”<\/p>\n But, backup quarterback Austin Simmons came in and led a scoring drive for the Rebels, stealing momentum right back. From that point on, Kiffin & Co. were the stars of the show, cruising to a 28-10 win.<\/p>\n “They scored a touchdown and you feel like ‘Wow, I didn’t see that coming,'” McElroy explained. “Jaxson Dart and company were then able to scrape nine more points out of the first half, and they had a lot of things that Georgia had to account for, so Lane Kiffin and his offensive staff deserve a ton of credit.”<\/p>\n McElroy went on to applaud the Rebel defense for its second-half showing, saying that they “settled in” and that the pass rush has become a truly elite unit.<\/p>\n “Ole Miss keeps their playoff hopes alive, and they are not a team you want to see in the Playoff,” McElroy said. “They are extremely dangerous and they proved that yesterday.
